Teachers should be working in and with a community to grow and teach youth. While our job is to distribute content knowledge, our goal should be for students to authentically create, engage, and learn content knowledge.”

Lekha’s Story

Teaching Discipline

Why Mathematics

“I enjoyed doing mathematics in high school, but later realized I wasn’t truly doing math until college. In high school, I was simply memorizing and regurgitating formulas and procedures, whereas in college, I was approaching material in a much more conceptual manner. As a math teacher, I hope to have my students engage with math in this way.”

Professional Experience

While in college, Lekha spent a summer working as a math curriculum team intern at Ascend Public Charter Schools in Brooklyn, New York. In this role, she tutored high school students and created unique math resources for K–8 teachers. Additionally, she constructed a proposal recommending the implementation of fluency assessments for basic math facts. Lekha also worked at Breakthrough Collaborative in Denver, Colorado, for a summer. There she taught math concepts for summer enrichment to rising ninth graders.

Lekha will begin her second year of teaching at Capital City Public Charter School during the 2021–2022 school year.

Lekha enjoys discovering and watching new television shows from a wide variety of genres.

She is trained in Bharatanatyam, a classical Indian dance form, and was a member of her college’s competitive dance team.
