New Human Evolution Science Curriculum
Knowles Senior Fellow, Kirstin Milks, has been working with Indiana University Bloomington biology professor and department chair Armin Moczek for nearly 15 years supporting STEM education in Bloomington Indiana, addressing curricular needs and modeling 21st-century best practices.
One of the things Milks and Moczek have been working on over the last decade is a new module on human evolution called “Reconstructing 6 Million Years of Human Evolution Using Diverse Data Sets”. This module enables students to reconstruct human evolution in a single 50-70 minute lesson, regardless of their prior knowledge of the subject.
They have tested and refined this module through training workshops and in over a hundred classrooms regionally. Through presenting this module, Milks and Moczek connected with the leadership of the National Center for Science Education, who is now incorporating this module into its curriculum distributed nationwide.
You can read more about the process and curriculum on the Indiana University Bloomington website and detailing of the module in the February issue of the American Biology Teacher.
