Five Years of Resources and Support Available for
New Science and Mathematics Teachers

Moorestown, N.J., May 1, 2019 – The Knowles Teacher Initiative is accepting applications for their 2020 Cohort of Teaching Fellows. The Knowles Teaching Fellows Program is a five-year program that supports early-career, high school mathematics and science teachers in their efforts to develop teaching expertise and lead from the classroom. Applications for 2020 Knowles Fellowships are due by 11:59 p.m. PST on December 1, 2019.

The Knowles Teaching Fellowship supports new high school math and science teachers with strong content preparation in physics, chemistry, biology, or mathematics in their efforts to develop the characteristics of a good teacher and lead from the classroom. Valued at approximately $150,000, Knowles Teaching Fellows have access to a wide range of benefits, including:

  • stipends;
  • grants for professional development, classroom materials and National Board Certification;
  • mentoring from veteran teachers and teacher educators;
  • support for teacher led initiatives; and
  • membership in a nationwide community of more than 400 science and math educators.

“Through the Knowles Teaching Fellows Program, we are able to strengthen the teaching practice of early-career, high school math and science teachers,” stated Nicole Gillespie, President and CEO, Knowles Teacher Initiative. “The Program supports our Fellows in their efforts to become teacher leaders on the local, state and national level, leading to improved student learning of mathematics and science.”

“The Knowles Fellowship changed my life. It introduced me to people who were extremely intelligent, thought deeply, and really challenged me to think about who I am as a teacher and what I want my classroom to look like,” said Scott Murphy, Knowles Teaching Fellow, 2008 Cohort. “Without the Knowles Fellowship, I wouldn’t be the teacher leader I am today.”

Knowles awards approximately 35 Fellowships annually to beginning high school math and science teachers who display the potential to develop: the content knowledge needed for teaching, exemplary teaching practices, and the qualities of a teacher leader.
