Five-year Teaching Fellowship supports beginning STEM teachers

Moorestown, N.J., July 7, 2014 – The Knowles Science Teaching Foundation (KSTF) today announced its 2014 cohort of Teaching Fellows. Selected from a pool of more than 180 applicants, 32 exceptionally talented, early-career science, technology, engineering and/or mathematics (STEM) teachers were awarded KSTF Teaching Fellowships. Equipped with a great wealth of skills and experience that will benefit the teaching profession and students across the nation, the 2014 cohort includes two former Peace Corps members, three engineers, an aquatic entomologist, a scientific diver, a river guide, a wilderness firefighter and a veteran of the United States Army.

KSTF seeks to improve STEM education by building a stable, sustainable cadre of networked leading teachers, who are trained and supported as leaders from the beginning of their careers. The KSTF Teaching Fellows Program—the Foundation’s signature program—offers stipends, funds for professional development, grants for teaching materials, and opportunities for leadership development and mentoring for early-career STEM teachers through a comprehensive five-year Fellowship. With an emphasis on inquiry and collaboration, the Teaching Fellows Program empowers participants to advance their teaching practice and student learning, while leading from the classroom.

“Individually and collectively, our 2014 Teaching Fellows have a strong desire to make STEM learning accessible and exciting for all students,” stated Nicole Gillespie, Executive Director, KSTF. “We are thrilled to welcome this talented group to the KSTF community and look forward to seeing them develop into primary agents of improvement in STEM education in their classrooms, schools and beyond.”

“I’m so honored and excited to be part of a program that will provide support and resources to help me make a difference, as I inspire my students to get excited about the science in their daily lives,” said Michelle Vanhala, a 2014 KSTF Teaching Fellow.
