I chose to be a high school science teacher because I am passionate about connecting the science curriculum to my students’ diverse funds of knowledge. I want to make science applicable to their lives.
Brianna’s Story
Teaching Discipline
Biology and Chemistry
Why Biology and Chemistry
I chose to teach high school biology and chemistry because I recognize the pivotal role this age group plays in shaping their future. High school students are at a crucial juncture where they make significant decisions about their careers, interests, and identities. I believe that science education, often perceived as challenging or uninteresting, can be transformed into a powerful tool for students to understand and engage with the world around them.
Professional Experience
Before transitioning to teaching, Brianna worked as a trained dental assistant. This experience helped hone her skills in communication, organization, and attention to detail, all of which have been invaluable in her teaching career.
As an undergraduate, Brianna served as a teaching assistant at Michigan State University’s Student-athlete support services, providing subject-based learning support. With her recent student teaching internship at Henry Ford Early College, where she cultivated inquiry-based learning environments to her ongoing role as a substitute teacher with EduStaff across Ingham and Washtenaw County, Brianna has adapted to varied classroom dynamics and grade levels. Brianna was a long term substitute in tenth grade biology and eleventh grade physical science classes. She has also done summer stints at Scarlett Middle School, and gained some experience at Chippewa Middle School and Cavanaugh Elementary School. These diverse experiences have enriched Brianna’s teaching practices, allowing her to create engaging, inclusive, and supportive learning environments tailored to the needs of each student.
Brianna currently holds her Michigan Secondary Standard Certificate and Illinois Professional Educator License, with expertise in 6-12 Biology and Chemistry, alongside an MDE PK-12 English as a Second Language Endorsement. She is currently teaching an English as a Second Language Physics course at a high school in the Chicago area.
Hobbies
Brianna loves traveling, cooking, spending quality time with friends, and meeting new people. She enjoys capturing memories, big or small, in digital diaries with photos, videos, and written reflections.
