Kate’s Story

Teaching Discipline

Physics

Why Physics

“I enjoy that physics at the conceptual level is quite accessible to students. It builds and challenges their everyday understanding of phenomenon while also teaching them reasoning and math skills.”

Professional Experience

During her graduate studies at Harvard University, Kate served as a teaching fellow in the physics department. In this role, she supported approximately 75 students. As an outreach specialist for the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, she coordinated an engineering design mentor program for fifth grade students.

Additionally, Kate spent a summer developing and teaching project-based, student driven courses for rising 10th–12th grade students as a mechanical engineering and sustainable engineering instructor for Yale University’s EXPLO program. She taught physics for one year prior to her participation in the Newton Teacher Residency Program.

In fall 2015, Kate started at Brookline High School as a full time physics teacher. At Brookline, she supports students interested in running as the Dreamfar High School Marathon Leader

Volunteer Experience

Kate brought science curriculum to local students as an apprenticeship teacher with Citizen Schools and an elementary mentor scientist teacher with Science Club for Girls. She also volunteered as head coordinator of Harvard Science Week and served on the board of Harvard Graduate Women in Science and Engineering.

Hobbies

Kate enjoys running, rock climbing, kitesurfing, water and snow skiing, playing with her dog and interior design.
